The Israeli authorities are to install security cameras and radar on the border fence it shares with Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, Maariv newspaper has reported. The move has been prompted by fears within the Israeli military establishment that armed groups might launch attacks on Israel from Sinai.
Construction of the main section of the fence, which was intended primarily to deter illegal African immigrants, was completed in January 2013. The rest was finished by the end of the year and it is hoped that it will protect Israel from the dangerous and unstable security situation in the peninsula.
An anonymous Egyptian military source told Turkey’s Anadolu that this is an Israeli issue as the cameras will be entirely within the Negev Desert. “We are not interested in commenting further,” he added. According to Anadolu, no official statements have been made on the stepping up of security along the border.
Last year, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the fence had achieved unprecedented results in curbing illegal immigrants to Israel.
