Saudi King: In Yemen we foiled plot to destabilise the region

Saudi has led a military offensive in Yemen to foil a regional plot by a sectarian group that aimed to destabilise regional security, Saudi King Salman Bin Abdulaziz said yesterday.

In an address read to clerics on his behalf by his adviser, Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, in Makkah, the Saudi king said the Saudi-led military operation prevented Yemen from “becoming a theatre for terrorism, discord, and internal fighting, similar to some countries.”

“Saudi Arabia wanted to support Yemen and confront the attempt to transform it into a base for launching a plot to undermine regional security and stability,” he said, warning against using sectarian conflicts to achieve political ambitions.

The Saudi monarch pointed out that Saudi Arabia resorted to a military option after having exhausted all peaceful means to bridge the gap in Yemen.

Saudi led a military offensive in Yemen against Shia Houthi rebels and militia loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh in March which ended a month later.
