The Grand Mufti of Egypt, Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim Allam, is reported to have caught plagiarising an article from the late Islamist theorist and leading member of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, Sayyid Qutb.

Allam lifted two pages from Qutb’s renowned Fi-Zilal Al-Qur’an (“In the Shade of the Qur’an”, 1954) turning them into an article on the virtue of fasting that he attributed to himself.

Allam published this plagiarized article in Egypt’s Youm7 newspaper on Tuesday.

Activists and journalists have pointed out that this is not the first time Allam has stolen from someone else’s work and attributed it to himself.

According to Al-Mesryoon newspaper, one of the Grand Mufti’s previous articles on the virtue of fasting published in Al-Shorouk newspaper was lifted from the book The Revival of Religious Science by Imam Al-Ghazali.

The newspaper pointed out that a majority of another article by Allam on the virtue of tolerance in Islam and published by Al-Mesaa newspaper on 17 April was taken from a book by Dr Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al-Tawil.
