Meat prices in Egypt up 30% this Ramadan

The price of meat in Egypt rose by 30 per cent during the month of Ramadan, Haitham Abdel-Baset, head of the Butchers Division at the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce (FECC), said.

According to Alamatonline.com, Abdel-Baset expects prices to increase by an additional 10 per cent during Eid Al-Fitr.

“People were stockpiling food products, especially meat, ahead of Ramadan, and higher breeding costs have also led to the price increases,” Abdel-Baset explained.

Egypt suffers from a severe shortage of meat. Two weeks ago, Egyptian media reported that local police raided a farm in Fayoum which was found to be raising donkeys for human consumption. Around 1,500 live and 30 slaughtered donkeys were reportedly seized from the farm.

Meanwhile, the head of Egyptian Food Safety Authority Hussein Mansour said eating donkey meat is perfectly safe – despite it being forbidden under Islamic law.
