Pressure from Algeria to cancel Morsi execution

July 6, 2015 at 10:12 am

Algerian President Abdul-Aziz Boutafliqa has been putting significant pressure on Egyptian President Abdul-Fattah Al-Sisi, asking him not to carry out the death sentence against ousted premier Mohamed Morsi, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported on Sunday.

The Algerian efforts came after a call by the head of Tunisia’s Ennahda party, Rashid Al-Ghanouchi, who recently visited Algeria and met with Boutafliqa. Al-Gounachi pre-empted a prospective visit of Al-Sisi to Algeria.

According to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, Boutafliqa promised to exert efforts in this regard. In the past, Algeria attempted to dissuade late Egyptian President Jamal Abdul Naser from executing Islamist thinker Sayid Qutub; to no avail.

Algeria has refused to brand Muslim Brotherhood as a “terrorist” organisation.

Previously, Al-Ghanouchi met with the presidents of several countries and asked them to put pressure on Al-Sisi not to execute Morsi.

An official from Ennahda said that Al-Ghanouchi had discussed the issue of death sentences against Muslim Brotherhood members and leaders with the politicians, including that of Mohamed Morsi.
