As many as 50 Jordanian lawmakers yesterday called for the Israeli Ambassador to Jordan Einat Shlein and to recall the Jordanian Ambassador Walid Obaidat from Tel Aviv in protest against the surge in attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Member of Parliament Ali Al-Sinaad told Turkey’s Anadolu Agency: “The presence of the Israeli ambassador on Jordanian soil weakens the Jordanian position because the Israelis will know that not taking any position means the inevitability of continuing relationships with them.”
The letter states that “the brutal Israeli aggression on Al-Aqsa Mosque not only insults the religious feelings of some 1.5 billion Muslims all over the world, but it puts our Palestinian brothers under the treacherous Israeli attacks and threatens the security and stability in the region.”
“Therefore, we ask the Jordanian government to expel the Israeli ambassador from Amman immediately, and recall the Jordanian ambassador from Israel,” it added.
Al-Sinaad explained that the letter also called on the government to review the Jordanian-Israeli peace agreement signed in 1994.
During a meeting with the President of the European Council Donald Tusk yesterday, Jordan’s King Abdullah II called on the European Union to take firm positions to stop the Israeli attacks and serious violations against Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Israeli forces have been storming Al-Aqsa Mosque for a week firing stun grenades against Palestinian worshippers, wounding many.
