Tunis denies mediation between Egyptian regime and Muslim Brotherhood

The official spokesman for the Tunisian Presidency Mo’iz Al-Sinawi on Tuesday denied any mediation between the Egyptian regime and the Muslim Brotherhood during bilateral meetings in Cairo, Quds Press reported.

Speaking to local Tunisian radio station Shams FM, Al-Sinawi also denied mediating between Egypt and the UAE, saying that the relations between the two countries are “excellent” and there is no need for a middle man.

Al-Sinawi said that the meeting between the Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi and Tunisian President Baji Caid Al-Sibsi in Cairo concerned the danger of internal and external terrorism represented by Daesh. The two leaders also discussed the Libyan issue.

Al-Sibsi said that the situation in Libya requires “much vigilance” from both Tunis and Egypt, which both adopt the same position regarding Libya.

Al-Sibsi also renewed his country’s rejection of an external intervention in Libya, stressing that the issue could be sorted out through dialogue between different Libyan parties. He said that his country is ready to help bring the Libyan factions to dialogue.

Analysts have suggested that Tunis is playing the role of mediator between Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood based on the successful coexistence between the state and the Islamists in Tunis.

Quds Press reported that the head of the Islamist party in Tunis, Sheikh Rachid Al-Ghannouchi, previously called on Saudi Arabia to mediate between the Egyptian regime and the Muslim Brotherhood.
