Coins dating from the Ottoman Caliphate period have been found by workers renovating a building in the Gaza Strip, Quds Press has reported. The coins were discovered on Sunday in the neighbourhood of Al-Shejaia, which is part of the Old City of Gaza.
“While working in Baghdad Street in Gaza, a number of coins burst from an old wall,” explained the Director of Gaza Municipality’s Planning Department, Nihad Al-Mughanni. “They scattered on the ground and many were taken away by local people.” The area was quickly cordoned off by security officers and experts were called in, he added.
Al-Mughanni pointed out that the Ottoman coins date back to 1730. The security forces are retrieving the coins taken from the haul by local people.
