NATO has decided to provide assistance in the refugee crisis “because it affects us all and we all have to contribute to solve it,” the organisation’s Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, adding that the Russian raids have significantly contributed to the worsening refugee crisis.
Stoltenberg told reporters that “NATO warships in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea are ready to defend the Turkish territory, in the event of a new development that would threaten Turkey’s safety and security.”
He stressed on the alliance’s commitments towards providing full support to Turkey regarding the protection of its territory and airspace, pointing out that “NATO will continue to provide support to countries that embrace Syrian refugees fleeing the killing machine in Syria”.
Remarking on negotiations aimed at ending the Syrian crisis between the opposition and the regime, Stoltenberg pointed out that one of the reasons for the postponement of the Geneva negotiations is the Russian bombardment of areas under the moderate opposition’s control.
