Ennahda supports government opposition to military intervention in Libya

The Ennahda movement stands by the Tunisian state’s official position that rejects military intervention in Libya.

In a statement released yesterday, the movement stressed that “they continue to make all possible efforts and coordination with the heads of state and the government to convince [Libyans] to form a Libyan national unity government that is agreed on by everyone and that would run the political process and close the doors against terrorism and all plots targeting the unity of Libya and its people.”

The movement stressed that “dealing with the internal and external risks that Tunisia is facing, especially in view of the complicated security and political situation in Libya, necessitates … supporting [Tunisian] national unity and cohesion among all political and social forces, rising above political bickering, marginal issues and superficial adversaries.”

“The main challenge that reflects the demands of young people today is primarily a development challenge,” emphasising “the legitimacy of the demands advocated by the protesters as well as their right to peaceful protest.”

In its statement, the movement called on the government to continue to implement the emergency measures it has adopted and to urge the Tunisian Parliament and the Assembly of the Representatives to exercise their role in overseeing the government and to work with politicians and social stakeholders on formulating a development action plan.

It also called on businessmen and the private sector to assume their role at this sensitive stage through providing job opportunities and launching projects in the Tunisian private sector so as to back the government’s efforts towards resolving the unemployment problem.
