Dozens of Russian generals were killed on Sunday in a car bomb attack at their base near the Syrian city of Latakia, the Ahrar al-Sham opposition movement claimed on Wednesday.
The Ahrar al-Sham media office said in a statement on its website: “Following weeks of surveillance the movement has managed, in cooperation with Bayan movement, to bomb a car after observing a gathering of senior Russian generals at the military base.”
The military base hit by the attack is considered one of the most important military centres of the Russian forces on the Syrian coast, located 15 kilometres from Latakia.
Syrian regime troops have been making considerable advances in the area with Russian support.
It was not possible to confirm the movement’s statement.
Russia and Syria have not commented on the incident.
