Opposition calls for more pressure on Russia and Iran to save Syrian people

May 2, 2016 at 12:07 pm

A member of the Syrian opposition coalition said on Sunday that more international pressure must be put on Russia and Iran in order to save “whatever remains of the Syrian people.” Speaking by telephone with the Egyptian news channel CBC Extra, Bassam Al-Malik called on the countries supporting Syria, such as the US, to reach agreement on a ceasefire.

The regime is trying to drive a wedge among the people, he said, by deciding to impose a ceasefire in Sunni-dominated Damascus and Latakia for 24 hours while the ceasefire in Alawite and Sahel areas is for 72 hours.

Al-Malik added that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad is trying to avoid the option of stepping down. He does not want the country to be under transitional rule but wants a more inclusive cabinet, the opposition leader claimed. He accused US President Barack Obama of weakness with regards to international peace and security.
