Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said on Tuesday that his government has allocated an additional 260 million euros for the years 2016 and 2017 to help Syrian refugees in the Middle East, with 80 million euros going to refugees in Lebanon.

In a press conference with his Lebanese counterpart Tammam Salam in Beirut, Rutte said: “We have allocated an amount of 260 million euros for the years 2016 and 2017 for countries who are hosting Syrian refugees in the region, including 80 million euros for Lebanon alone.”

He pointed out that the Netherlands previously allocated 100 million euros for the same period and funded initiatives that aimed at “opening the future prospects for displaced people and communities that host them”.

He stressed that Lebanon was hosting a large number of Syrian refugees, adding: “Dealing with this volume of displacement and finding shelter for all those displaced people constitutes a significant burden on the local infrastructure and generates a lot of needs among the Lebanese people too.”

The Dutch PM arrived on Tuesday in Beirut for a visit which lasted a few hours. He was accompanied by the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Liliane Ploumen.
