Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation announced yesterday that it has purchased 4.076 million tonnes of locally produced wheat from farmers since the beginning of the season in mid-April.
Agriculture Minister Essam Fayed said in a statement that the government is committed to purchasing the entire crop from farmers in all provinces until the end of the season in July.
Earlier this year, the Egyptian government announced that it planned to purchase wheat from farmers at a price of 420 Egyptian pounds ($47.2) for every 150 kilogrammes.
Some 3.439 million acres of land is cultivated with wheat across the country.
Last year, the government purchased approximately 5.275 million tonnes of wheat from farmers.
