UK renews travel warning to areas in Turkey

June 8, 2016 at 9:49 am

The British Foreign Ministry yesterday renewed its warning to nationals to avoid travel to certain parts of Turkey.

In a statement the ministry said that the bomb attack in the Beyazit area of Istanbul yesterday killed seven police officers and four civilians.

It added that operations against the PKK and related groups are ongoing in the Sur district of Diyarbakir, adding that similar operations have taken place in Sirnak and Hakkari.

Though it is safe to travel to Turkey, British citizens should take additional safety precautions and remain vigilant in crowded and popular tourist spots, the ministry said.

Travel to within 10 kilometres of the border with Syria and to the city of Diyarbakir should be avoided, it added.

The ministry has also advised against all but essential travel to the areas of Sirnak, Mardin, Sanliurfa, Gaziantep, Diyarbakir, Kilis and Hatay as well as Siirt, Tunceli and Hakkari.
