The Egyptian army announced yesterday that it destroyed four tunnel terminals near its borders with the Gaza Strip, Felesteen newspaper reported.

Spokesman of the Egyptian Army, Brigadier General Mahmoud Samir wrote on Facebook: “During the time between June 9 and 17, border guard forces in cooperation with the military engineers revealed and destroyed four tunnel terminals along the northern Sinai borders [the borders with Gaza].”

Meanwhile, Samir said that the Egyptian security services and other specialist sectors arranged the entry of 1,342 trucks loaded with commodities into the Gaza Strip via the Kerem Shalom Crossing between Gaza and Israel.

Last year, the Egyptian army began injecting sea water inside the soil along the Gaza border in an attempt to destroy the tunnels which have been used for smuggling food, medical supplies and other necessary commodities to the besieged coastal enclave.

Gaza has been under strict Israeli, Egyptian and international siege for 10 years. The siege started after Hamas won elections conducted in the Palestinian territories in the 2006.
