July 19, 2016 at 2:50 pm

Deputy Greek Defence Minister Dimitris Vitsas said yesterday that a “quick” extradition of the eight Turkish soldiers who fled in a helicopter during the coup is in favour of Athens, the Anadolu Agency reported.

Speaking on Greek TV on Sunday, Vistsas said: “What must be implemented is Greek and international law.”

He said the asylum application would be examined “but I must say that the argument in favour of extradition from the Turkish side is quite strong, I would say very strong.”

The decisions would be made by the judiciary, noting that the examination of asylum applications “usually takes from 15 to 25 days.”

On Friday, during the coup in Turkey, eight Turkish military personnel fled to Greece using a military helicopter, seeking asylum. They were put in prison.

According to Anadolu, they were taken from Feres Prison in the northern city of Alexandroupoli to an asylum centre in the Nea Chili neighbourhood this morning.
