Soldier killed in PKK attack in south-eastern Turkey

August 7, 2016 at 2:17 pm

One soldier was killed and four others injured during an anti-terror operation in south-eastern Turkey early on Sunday morning.

Soldiers came into close contact with PKK terrorists in the Eruh district of Siirt province; during the clashes one soldier was martyred. Hospital sources said four others were wounded. The injured were taken to Siirt State Hospital as air-supported operations to capture the PKK terrorists continued.

South-eastern Turkey has seen a number of terror attacks and counter-terrorism operations by security forces since the PKK – listed as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and the EU – resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the state in July 2015.

Since then, nearly 600 security personnel, including troops, police officers and village guards have been killed and more than 5,000 PKK terrorists killed in operations across Turkey and northern Iraq.
