Man dies after setting fire to himself in front of police station in Tunisia

A young man in his twenties committed suicide on Wednesday by setting himself on fire outside a police station near the Tunisian coastal city of Sousse, local newspapers reported.

Acharaa al-Magharbi newspaper reported a security source saying that the victim covered himself in gasoline in front of the police station before setting himself on fire.

Abderraouf Ayadi, head of the Wafa movement, said that the high rate of suicide attempts in Tunisia is evidence of the extent of the economic and social crisis in the country.

“Following the revolution the Tunisians could not translate their gains to freedom of expression or economic and development gains, while the youth remained marginalized,” he said.
