Assad imposes another siege on Aleppo

September 5, 2016 at 1:43 pm

Aleppo is again under siege after Syrian government forces recaptured the city yesterday with the support of Russian airstrikes.

Syria’s second largest city has been a major battle ground between the regime and anti-Assad forces since the conflict began in 2011.

Last month, opposition forces broke through a government siege on Aleppo’s eastern neighbourhood which is home to some 300,000 residents.

Civilians in eastern Aleppo were almost entirely cut off from vital supplies, including food, water, medicine and electricity, for over a month as a result of the last government siege

The takeover of the city by government forces has seen the re-imposition of the siege on city’s rebel held neighbourhoods.

Reporting from the city of Elbeyli on the Turkish side of the Syria-Turkey border, Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra said: “The army has managed now to control many areas within the vast complex that houses military installations. Rebel factions say that they are going to reunite in order to launch a counter offensive.”

He said this was in Aleppo’s Ramosa quarter which “is crucial for all parties. It is crucial for the government because it will pave the way for them to encircle rebel-held areas. It’s also crucial for the rebels because it is the only supply line.”
