US State Department: Syria ceasefire continues to hold

September 14, 2016 at 3:04 am

According to the a statement by US State Department Spokesperson, Mark Toner, the current truce in Syria has held through its second day.

We have seen, as I said, some reports of sporadic violence, but thus far, the arrangement as a whole seems to be holding and the violence is lower in comparison to previous days and weeks.

For the US and Russia, the critical number is seven days, because if the lull in violence were to last a full week the two militaries would begin work on coordinating strikes.

In particular the US-Russia brokered truce would target strikes against the group, Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, which until recently was known as Jabhat al Nusra and aligned to Al Qaeda.

However Toner warned against unrestrained optimism, particularly if the US finds there to be credible evidence that the truce has been breached. In such case the US would “simply walk away and say the agreement is null and void”.
