Sweden criticises Denmark over refugees

The Swedish Minister for Justice and Migration Morgan Johansson criticised Denmark for suspending the reception of its portion of refugees decided by the United Nations, Anadolu Agency reported on Friday.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Johansson said that the Danish decision is “extremely wrong,” and stressed the importance of all countries to commit to their obligations regarding international deals on refugees.

“Based on the UN’s quota system, we receive 1,900 refugees yearly,” Johansson said, adding, “we fulfil all of their needs.”

On Wednesday, Denmark announced it had suspended its intake of 500 refugees every year for an unspecified period.

The Danish minister responsible for immigration, Inger Stojberg, said that the Scandinavian country had become filled with refugees, prompting Denmark’s decision.

Meanwhile, Johansson also called for Hungary to commit to the Dublin Deal and accept their quota of 1,000 refugees who had arrived to Sweden after failing to seek asylum in Hungary.

He noted that Swedish officials had met with the Hungarian ambassador to Stockholm last week who was told that the issue would be reported to the European Commission if Hungary did not meet its obligations.

The Swedish official said that his country had extended the decision to monitor its borders, which was made last year, up until November, noting that the refugee influx had dramatically decreased as a result.

Johansson also noted that there would be a meeting in New York on Monday and it would discuss the refugee crisis, but failed to mention which countries and organisations would be taking part in the meeting.
