Algeria’s foreign minister has met his Turkish counterpart on the fringes of the UN General Assembly in New York, Anadolu reported on Sunday. On the agenda for Ramtane Lamamra and Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu were the crises in Syria and Libya.

According to a statement released by the Algerian foreign ministry, issues related to the “safety and stability” of the region were discussed, as were mutual relations. Lamamra expressed his “happiness about Algerian-Turkish cooperation”, citing collaboration in the field of textiles and the renovation of archaeological sites. Çavuşoğlu hailed Algeria’s “balanced stances” on international affairs.

The two officials also discussed Turkey’s interests across the African continent, which is represented by a large diplomatic presence.

Algeria is one of the countries that has mediated between the rival camps in Libya and hosted Libyan dialogues. It has resisted any foreign military interference, and has been calling for international support for the national agreement government led by Fayez Al-Sarraj.

During the meeting, Çavuşoğlu presented a letter of thanks to Algeria for its support for international legitimacy and condemnation of this summer’s failed coup attempt in Turkey.
