Russia, Syria stop airstrikes on Aleppo

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu announced this morning that Russian and Syrian air forces had stopped airstrikes on Aleppo from 10.00 local time (07.00 GMT), ahead of the announced “humanitarian pause” scheduled for Thursday.

Shoigu said on Monday that a pause in strikes on Syria’s largest city would be in force on Thursday, from 08.00 (05.00 GMT) until 16.00, to allow civilians and rebels to leave the city.

Military experts will meet in Geneva tomorrow to begin work on separating “terrorists” from Syria’s opposition, Russia’s state Rossiya 24 channel showed Shoigu saying.

The US and Russia met over the weekend to discuss bringing an end to the war in Syria which has claimed the lives of over 300,000 civilians and led to more than 13 million other being forced to flee their homes.
