Creating new perspectives since 2009

The number of terrorist attacks and the death tolls from such assaults has been declining steadily since 2010, according to the 2016 Global Terrorism Index published by the Australian think tank Institute for Economics and Peace.

In the report, the think tank also ranked the impact of terrorism in 163 countries based on the study of four indicators: the number of terrorist incidents over a year, the number of victims of terrorism, the number of people injured in terrorist attacks, and the assessment of damage caused by terrorist incidents.

Impacted by terror

  • Iraq
  • Afghanistan
  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan
  • Syria
  • Yemen
  • Somalia
  • India
  • Egypt
  • Libya

Of the countries surveyed, Algeria ranked in 42nd place, behind Palestine at 28, Germany at 41. Tunisia ranked 35th whilst Morocco stood further down at 95. The countries where terrorism impacted the most are those which are experiencing deadly wars: Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen.

In 2014, 93 countries had at least one terrorist attack and around 32,765 were killed as a result, making it the most deadly year.
