Algeria hosts international conference on ending colonialism in Africa

November 29, 2016 at 1:18 pm

The Algerian foreign ministry is hosting an international conference on ending colonialism in Africa. National and international delegates are attending the programme to discuss the unique relationship between Africa and Algeria, which derives its essence from the common struggles for emancipation from colonialism and the Apartheid regime.

“The conference will allow us to emphasise the international community’s commitment to the right of self-determination in accordance with international legitimacy,” said a ministry spokesperson.

According to Dr Abdul Ali Razzagui, a professor of political science at the University of Algiers, the conference is being held in the context of the Morocco-Algeria conflict over Western Sahara. He added that it aims to confirm Algeria’s support for the choice of the people of the region to have a referendum and self-determination.

The Foreign Minister of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, used a press conference at the Polisario Embassy in Algiers on Sunday to criticise the withdrawal of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain delegations from the 4th African-Arab summit in support of Morocco. Ould Salek believes that Morocco’s decision not attend was an impromptu decision and “a grave error in protest at allowing the Polisario to attend the summit.”
