Remains of possible Jordanian soldier found in East Jerusalem

Israeli Jerusalem municipality crews on Wednesday uncovered the remains of two unidentified soldiers during excavation works in the occupied East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sur Bahir, Israeli media reported.

The Times of Israel reported that the nationalities of the two soldiers remained unknown, but that the remains date back to before the creation of the state of Israel in 1948.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses told Ma’an that the remains of at least one Jordanian soldier, including his military uniform, were found during the excavation works in an area of Sur Bahir that served as a Jordanian military post prior to Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967.

According to locals, the district west of Sur Bahir where the remains were found was a Jordanian military camp named Al-Jaras that Israeli forces occupied during a battle with the Jordanian army in 1967, in which six Israeli soldiers and 85 Jordanian soldiers were killed.

The remains of the soldiers were reportedly taken to Abu Kabir Forensic Institute for examination.
