Egypt and the US will work together to combat terrorism, the “problem of the century”, the leaders said in a press conference ahead of their meeting today.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi is in Washington D.C. on an official visit which starts today. This is the first time the leader has been invited to America after he took office in a military coup in 2013.

Al-Sisi said he admired US President Donald Trump’s unique style.

I just want to let everybody know in case there was any doubt that we are very much behind President Sisi. He’s done a fantastic job in a very difficult situation. We are very much behind Egypt and the people of Egypt

Trump said in the Oval Office meeting.

Al-Sisi left Cairo for Washington on Saturday. As well as a meeting with Trump, Al-Sisi will see the top officials at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, where he will pitch for help with his country’s’ ailing economy.

His visit to the US was met with a silent protest which was held outside against his human rights abuses and the forced disappearance of hundred of Egyptians since he took office.
