Jordanian King Abdullah II and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday stressed on the need to re-launch peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians based on the two-state solution as the sole solution to end the conflict and establish an independent Palestinian state.

The leaders met in Amman, the local Petra news agency reported, where they discussed King Abdullah’s recent meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington in addition to Abbas’ upcoming visit to the White House on Wednesday.

The meeting also focused on “the Arab peace initiative, which was re-launched during the Arab Summit hosted by the Kingdom”.

In this regard, King Abdullah II considered that “the initiative constitutes the most comprehensive framework to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.”

Abbas and the Jordanian king also discussed “the need to preserve the historical status in Jerusalem, which is a holy city for Arabs and Muslims. The two leaders rejected all unilateral Israeli measures which pose a threat to the holy city’s Arab identity.

The Palestinian president expressed appreciation for Jordan’s support of the rights of Palestinian people and their just cause.
