Egypt orders scenes found ‘insulting’ by Sudan be deleted from TV show

Scenes from an Egyptian TV show which were deemed “insulting” by Sudan have been deleted.

The head of the Supreme Council of Media Regulation in Egypt, Makram Mohamed Ahmed, said: “The Council is keen to strengthen relations between Egypt and Sudan”, adding that “scenes that Sudan viewed as ‘offensive’ have been reviewed and deleted.”

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry on Saturday summoned the Egyptian Ambassador to Sudan, Osama Shaltout, to protest against the Ramadan series titled Abu Omar Al-Masri, broadcasted by On-E TV satellite channel which showed Egyptian terrorists hiding in Sudan.

The ministry said the series promotes “stereotypes regarding accusations of terrorism against Egyptians living or visiting Sudan”.

For their part, On-E said in a statement: “The makers of the Al-Masri series understand well the importance of art in bringing people together and do not aim to provoke any crises.”

“They also understand the importance of Egyptian-Sudanese relations and the crucial strategic partnership between the two countries.”
