Egypt’s Supreme Court yesterday annulled a decision to include former President, Mohamed Morsi, and 1,500 other members of the Muslim Brotherhood group on the country’s terror list.
An official judicial source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Anadolu Agency that the Court of Cassation accepted the appeals by Morsi, Egypt’s first elected civilian president, and other members of the Brotherhood group, including the prominent football player, Mohamed Aboutrika, to remove their names from the terror list.
The court’s decision, the source added, has been returned to the criminal court for review.
On 12 January 2017, the Cairo Criminal Court placed Morsi, Aboutrika and 1,538 others, including several Muslim Brotherhood leaders and businessmen, on the terror list.
The Egyptian authorities accuse the defendants of having links with the Muslim Brotherhood group, which was classified as a “terrorist organisation” by the Egyptian government in 2013.
