Amid talks about the preparation of the new Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, for the transfer of his country’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem, media outlets and social media websites, including Walla! website, have been flooded with pictures showing the President’s two sons wearing two t-shirts, one bearing the IDF logo and the other the Mossad logo.
Eduardo and Carlos, the sons of Bolsonaro, had visited Israel while wearing t-shirts bearing the IDF and Mossad logos. The photo was published on Eduardo’s Twitter account in 2016.
Following the winning of President Bolsonaro, a right-wing candidate who pledged to transfer his country’s embassy to Jerusalem, the photo of the two brothers has been re-published.
“The countries of the First World appreciate their armed forces and their police,” Eduardo wrote in a Tweet on 13 May 2016.
In this context, President Bolsonaro has expressed more than once his appreciation for the military rule that prevailed in Brazil until the mid-1980s.
Eduardo also published another Tweet where he appeared wearing the uniform of the Israeli soccer team, next to a soldier holding his weapon. He captioned the photo: “Does anyone believe they intend to harm young children in this photo? This weapon is used to defend citizens in Israel.”
The policy that the elected Brazilian president is working on its implementation and his choice of Israel as one of his first destinations two months after winning the presidency have raised tensions with a number of countries, including Egypt which postponed a planned visit by the Brazilian Foreign Minister in protest against his intention to transfer his country’s embassy to Jerusalem.
