Sudan's Sadiq Al-Mahdi: Bashir must leave immediately

January 26, 2019 at 1:06 pm

Head of the Sudanese National Ummah Party, Sadiq Al-Mahdi, said yesterday that he supports the demonstrations calling for the removal of Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir.

“Omar Al-Bashir must leave,” Al-Mahdi said during Friday prayer, which was attended by hundreds of his supporters. He added: “We support these demonstrations and the main demands that this regime must leave and a transitional government should take up its responsibilities.”

Al-Mahdi claimed that “more than 50 people have been killed since the start of the demonstrations on 19 December 2018”.

Since December, the country has been witnessing demonstrations in protest against the deteriorating living situation and calling for ousting the regime. About 25 people have been killed during the demonstrations, according to the Sudanese government, though Amnesty International claimed the number of deaths is around 40. Al-Mahdi claimed the figure to be 50.

Commenting on the death of one demonstrator last week, Al-Bashir said that he was killed by a kind of weapon not used by the police, avoiding responsibility for the deaths. Al-Bashir has accused external powers of fueling the demonstrations amidst efforts to get Russian and Chinese investors to put money into the country in order to improve its economic situation.
