Preparations for electricity link between Sudan, Egypt complete

The spokesperson of the Sudanese Water Resources and Electricity Ministry, Ibrahim Shaqlawi, said yesterday that the ministry has completed technical preparations for an electricity interconnection line with Egypt, the New Khaliji reported.

The connection is expected to go live at the end of March, Shaqlawi said, noting that the capacity of the transferable power through the linkage would be 220 (kilovolts) kV and would reach up to 300 megawatts (MW).

Previous reports stated that this could be increased in the future to up to 3,000 MW when connecting through the 500kV, which is subject to studies through the joint committees of the two countries.

At the same time, Sudan has suffered repeated electricity blackouts due to a range of problems, including a dysfunction its the electricity supply from Ethiopia.

Egypt, which has surplus electricity power, might receive commodities in return for channelling its electricity supplies to the neighbouring country.

This linkage will also enable Egypt to supply other African countries with electricity such as Chad, South Africa and Eritrea, which will have an economic benefit for Egypt.
