Ex-Tunisia president says Kais Saied’s mistakes may amount to high treason

Tunisia’s former president Dr Moncef Marzouki stressed that the worst mistake made by the current President Kais Saied is that he caused division among the people and opened the door to foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs which undermines the sovereignty of the state.

Marzouki told Al-Hiwar TV on Monday, that he hopes that reports that Prime Minister Hicham Mechichi had been assaulted at the presidential palace in the presence of foreign officers is incorrect, because if the rumours turn out to be true, it would be high treason.

He urged Mechichi to make a public appearance and address the people in a video to clarify the situation.

Tunisian politician Jilani Hammami, spokesman for the Tunisian Workers’ Party, said that media outlets had reported details of ongoing consultations between France and the United States on a “road map” for the political crisis the country is going through. They include not involving the army and security forces in political affairs, while making sure that Kais Saied remains in his position as head of the state until the end of his term.

A prime minister would be appointed and a government formed without the participation of the Ennahda Party, with parliament resuming its activities by 28 August and Ennahda leader Rached Ghannouchi continuing to preside over the assembly until a Constitutional Court is established.

The roadmap also calls for refraining from prosecuting MPs and businessmen and avoiding all practices that are considered violations of human rights and public and individual freedoms.

Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported that the US administration is concerned with the situation in Tunisia and considers it one of the White House’s priorities.
