Member of the political bureau of Hamas, Mousa Abu Marzouk, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Professor Gilles Devers, saying the lawyer had worked hard to defend the rights of Palestinians.
In a message sent to Devers’s family, Abu Marzouk said that “Professor Devers made significant efforts in defending the rights of the Palestinian people, despite his serious illness. He was one of the leading lawyers before the International Criminal Court, and his role was instrumental in the recent decisions to pursue Israeli war criminals.”
“Professor Devers was a staunch legal defender of human rights, resolute in confronting injustice, and carried a humanitarian message.”
“Our loss, and the loss of our Palestinian people, is immense. The memory of Professor Gilles will remain immortal in the hearts of the Palestinian people and the oppressed around the world,” he added.
Abu Marzouk extended his deepest condolences to Devers’ family and to all those who support justice and freedom globally.
Devers died on Tuesday at the age of 68. His death came just five days after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes — a milestone he had long fought for.
