Senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk said on Tuesday that approving the proposed plan to establish an international force in Gaza through a UN Security Council resolution, as suggested by the United States, would be difficult to achieve.

In remarks reported by Al Jazeera Mubasher, Abu Marzouk said that mediators had insisted that the creation of the international force in Gaza must be authorised by the Security Council.

He explained that both the United States and Israel were not in favour of such a force being established under a UN mandate.

Abu Marzouk added, “It is unacceptable to have a military force that serves as a substitute for the occupation army in Gaza.”

He also noted that the Israeli occupation had violated the ceasefire agreement more than 190 times since it came into effect on 11 October.

The movement official stressed that there is a Palestinian consensus that any security force in Gaza should be Palestinian, led by the Gaza Administration Committee. He confirmed that this option reflects a united Palestinian will to manage security independently, without foreign interference.

Earlier, Hamas leader in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, stated that “Hamas’s weapons are linked to the end of the occupation and the establishment of a Palestinian state.”
