The history of the ancient city Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient World and on the list of UNESCO, is known for the Hanging Gardens, the Hammurabi Obelisk and the Babylonian Lion dates back to about 4,000 years ago. The city used to be the largest in the world, and the center of the ancient Babylonian Empire, where civilization first flourished near the Euphrates River and the first written laws were enforced by Hammurabi. The remains of the city were damaged during the construction of the palace of Saddam Hussein in 90s and during the U.S. invasion in 2003 and establishing a military base on ruins.
