On Saturday, Hisham Geneina, the former head of Egypt’s highest Control Authority and candidate for deputy president (on the ticket of Lieutenant General Sami Hafez Anan) was attacked by unidentified men near his home, east Cairo, according to his lawyer.

On Saturday, Ali Taha, the lawyer of the former head of the Egypt’s Accountability State Authority, said that his client was attacked with cold weapons while he was on his way to attend an appeals court session over a case he had filed to challenge a presidential decree that removed him from office, which was apparently issued after disclosing corruption files of officials on top of their work.

On his Facebook page, Taha accused those he called “Baltagiya” (thugs) of causing the incident.  He continued by saying: “Three Baltagiya attacked him with cold weapons.”

Taha said that Geneina “has filed a report of the incident at the police station of the Fifth Settlement, after a fractured foot injury and a longitudinal wound in the face and head.”

Taha went on: “Hisham Geneina has been bleeding for an hour and the investigation had to be completed before he could be treated.”

Deputy Hisham Geneina went with his lawyer to the international hospital in the Fifth Settlement to receive the necessary medical treatment.

The Egyptian presidency dismissed Geneina from his post at the end of March 2017, without mentioning the reasons for this, except for the official news agency’s reference to a statement by the Supreme State Security Prosecution, in which it said that Geneina’s claim that he have discovered corruption cases which exceeded 600 billion Egyptian pounds (about $ 32 billion) in 2015, is inaccurate.

At that time, Geneina said that the decision to put him on trial and to dismiss him from the presidency of Egypt’s Accountability State Authority, because of his talk about financial and administrative corruption, is arbitrary.

On 17 May, 2017, Geneina filed a lawsuit against President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi for dismissing him from his post, according to his lawyer.

Proceedings of Geneina’s trial started on 8 June, and on the 28th of the same month the court reserved the case for final judgment, without executing the defence requests or hearing the pleadings of Geneina.

The dismissal of Geneina, who was waiting for his retirement and his official departure from office, has sparked a wide debate in the Egyptian political scene, as lawyers and politicians considered the decision “illegal” and a “violation” of the independence of Egypt’s Accountability State Authority, which is Egypt’s highest Control Authority.
