France condemns violence in Egypt and stresses support for inclusive democracy

January 30, 2014 at 10:44 am

France has condemned the latest violence in Egypt and expressed regret over the casualties. Philippe Lalliot, a spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry, told a press conference on Monday that his country reminds everyone of the need to respect freedom of assembly and protest as long as this right is exercised “in a peaceful manner”.

Mr Lalliott stressed France’s support “for a process of inclusive democracy” that is open to all political movements “which reject violence”. This is essential, he added, to establish civilian democratically-elected institutions in accordance with the timetable set by the interim government’s “road map”.
