The Ministry of Agriculture in the Gaza Strip has launched the opening of the melon harvest season for 2012. At a ceremony conducted in the southern district of Rafah, it was confirmed that self-sufficiency targets set by the government have been attained. A number of senior officials from the ministry, engineers and farmers participated in the ceremony.

Ministry officials confirmed that this year’s production has surpassed previous years both in terms of quantity and quality, with 1,000 square metres producing 6 tons of melons. To-date, the total output for this year has reached 32,000 tons.

Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Ibrahim al-Qudra, said that the support given to farmers over the past three years has reduced the need for imports substantially and enabled the government to achieve its self-sufficiency targets.
