Israel told to review its situation following the loss of its "strategic treasure"

The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt has called on Israel to “review its accounts” following the fall of the Mubarak regime in Egypt; Hosni Mubarak was regarded as a “strategic treasure” by Israel.

In a statement issued on 23 March, the movement said: “The conditions have changed, with the people of Egypt regaining their sovereignty and free will after living under a regime in perpetual subjugation to Israel.” This bending to the will of Israel was so great, said the Brotherhood, that Egypt supported the blockade of Gaza. According to the spokesman, “preoccupation with the winds of change blowing across the region, uprooting the agents of the Zionists in oppressive governments, will not distract the Arab nation from the principal issue: the question of Palestine and the sanctity of its Christian and Muslim holy places.”

The Brotherhood hailed the position taken by the Egyptian army in support of a peaceful popular revolution, which includes recognition of the desire of the people of Egypt to break the siege of Gaza and its population. It also called on all Palestinian factions, particularly Fatah and Hamas, to make every effort to achieve national unity and reconciliation. “A united stance,” said the spokesman, “is crucial to challenging Zionist attacks against the Palestinian land and people.”
