Below are pictures of the Israeli factory of Gheishuri located at the entrance to southern Tulkarem and the town of Artah. Palestinian residents of Artah live no more than a few metres from the factory which produces agricultural insecticides and paint. Consequently, residents suffer from the effects of the factory’s gaseous waste and are forced to wear masks in their own homes.

These Israeli industrial zones in the immediate vicinity of Palestinian houses constitute a destructive force and are a grave danger. As well as the Gheishuri factories which produce toxic substances, there are other factories including ones which produce cartons and the electronic circuit boards among other things. As a consequence, cancerous diseases are widespread among the population of the area afflicting local workers. Workers and residents are also affected by asthma and skin diseases.

The Israeli decree to establish industrial zones near Palestinian houses was issued as part of the unilateral disengagement plan announced by the Sharon government. It was decided that 9 industrial zones inside the borders of the West Bank and Gaza and near the Green Line would be established with the aim of supporting Israeli industry and economy. One of these zones is the area situated between the village of Firoun and the Apartheid Wall in the south-west of the Tulkarem governorate. As a consequence of these zones, a substantial environmental disaster has been caused in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. This is in addition to the Gheishuri factory group’s current exploitation of Palestinian labour in the governorate.
