US renews Egypt travel alert

April 9, 2014 at 12:15 pm

The U.S. Department of State renewed its Egypt travel alert “due to continuing political and social unrest”.

The alert stated that political unrest that followed the July 3 military coup is expected to continue in the near future. It added that protests often turn violent, with both police and demonstrators engaging in violent clashes. The alert also warned of “gender-based violence” and sexual harassment of women.

The U.S. State Department also urged U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to North Sinai due to the ongoing violence there.

The report added that U.S. citizens “should remain alert to local security developments” in all tourist locations after the Taba tourist bus bomb.
