Congress bill calls for designating Muslim Brotherhood as 'terrorist organisation'

July 26, 2014 at 12:50 pm

A number of republicans in the US Congress have submitted a bill that designates the Muslim Brotherhood as a “foreign terrorist organisation” (FTO), Anadolu reported.

The bill, submitted on Thursday by republican congresswoman Michele Bachmann and supported by seven other republicans, outlaws and criminalises any financial support for the group, and proposes the closure of any organisation that cooperates with the Muslim Brotherhood in the US.

In April, the UK Prime Minister David Cameron called for a probe into the ideology and activities of the Muslim Brotherhood in Britain. The results of the probe are expected to be announced by the end of July.

The Congress bill called for denying visas for MB supporters and deporting those who work for the MB from the US.

Supporters of the bill argue that the essence of MB ideology advocates international Jihad and extremism, citing the group’s motto: “Allah is our goal; Quran is our constitution; the prophet is our leader; Jihad is our way; and dying for the sake of Allah is the loftiest of our wishes.”

The bill has been submitted to the judicial, foreign affairs, and finance committees in congress. The committees are yet to schedule a date for discussing the bill.

The Egyptian and Saudi governments have labelled the Brotherhood a “terrorist group” on the heels of the July 3 military coup in Egypt.
