Russia to build first nuclear power plant in Jordan

Russia’s Rosatom will cooperate in the construction of the first nuclear power station in Jordan, an announcement on the Russian government website said on Thursday.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed an agreement for the plant’s construction with the Kingdom of Jordan on Thursday. The Russian state-owned company Rosatom will form a joint venture with the Jordanian ministry, in which the Russian company will have 49.9 percent of the shares and Jordan will own 50.1 percent.

The agreement is to be financed by investments from both parties.

The new power station is to consist of two units, each capable of generating 1,000 megawatts of electrical power. According to the construction timetable, the first unit is to be operational by 2024, with the second going online in 2026.
