Quartet cancels visit following Israeli demands

October 13, 2015 at 1:48 pm

A Quartet delegation cancelled its planned visit to the Palestinian territories and Israel after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu requested they do so, Israeli media said yesterday.

Analysts expected Netanyahu had made the request fearing the delegation would put pressure on him to de-escalate tensions in the region.

Israeli officials and a Western diplomat told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz that the visit was cancelled because of Netanyahu’s demand.

The diplomat said that on Sunday, Netanyahu phoned the Chief of EU Foreign Policy Federica Mogherini, who is leading the EU initiative, and told her that there is no need to dispatch envoys in the light of the ongoing escalation.

An EU delegation was due to meet senior Israeli figures, including security officials.
