Israeli President Reuven Rivlin yesterday received the diplomatic credentials of the new Egyptian Ambassador to Tel Aviv Hazem Khairat.

Khairat was appointed by President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi in June 2014.

Rivlin welcomed the new ambassador in his presidential residence in Jerusalem and stressed the important role his country plays in the region.

“We live together in a difficult region. We have found a way to live together in peace and friendship. This is a message to the whole region, and the whole world,” Rivlin said.

“I was in Egypt during times of war, and I was in Egypt during peace. The peace agreement between our countries is an international treaty and it is a top priority for both of us. We may not agree on everything, but we respect each other and because of this we will build a shared future,” Rivlin said.

Khairat told Rivlin: “We must take responsibility for the benefit of those who live in this region, and to bring prosperity, justice, hope and equality.”

Egypt’s former Ambassador to Israel Asim Salim was recalled by Egypt’s ousted President Mohamed Morsi in 2012 in protest against the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip.
