Abadi will not prevent Shia forces from fighting for Mosul

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi yesterday rejected a decision by the Nineveh Provincial Council to prohibit the Shia, pro-government Popular Mobilisation forces from taking part in the liberation of Mosul.

In a speech, Al-Abadi said: “Nobody can stop Iraqis from participating in the liberation of their land, because the interests of the country and our people are the most important priority for us.”

He added that there should be no political intervention in the military action, saying that he would not allow such intervention to put Iraq’s forces at risk in order to appease one party or another.

The local government of the Nineveh province announced on Monday its rejection of the Hashd Al-Shaabi forces’ participation in the liberation of Mosul.
