Iraqi political blocs reject prime minister’s cabinet nominees

April 11, 2016 at 2:01 pm

The political blocs in the Iraqi parliament have rejected the majority of cabinet nominees proposed by Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi, a move likely to continue the system of party-affiliated ministers he called to change, an anonymous MP told Anadolu news agency on Sunday.

The MP said that the political blocs have agreed to reject the proposal and to propose new candidates for the government to substitute Al-Abadi’s line-up.

Al-Abadi has said that “fundamental” change to the cabinet is needed so that it includes “professional and technocratic figures and academics”. He presented a list of candidates to parliament last week but has faced major opposition.

The political blocs’ proposal includes Mohammed Ali Hakim, Iraq’s ambassador to the United Nations as the candidate for the foreign ministry, Fadil Abdul Nabi for the finance ministry and Musa al-Moussawi, head of Baghdad University, for higher education.

Their proposal also includes Mustafa al-Hiti for the planning ministry, Abdul Kahar Samurai for the ministry of education and Aws Orfali for the ministry of agriculture, with the defence and interior ministers remaining in their posts, according to the source.
